The Power at Work Within Us

Ephesians 3:19-21 “Now to him, who by the power at work within us, is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Did you know there was a power at work within us?  Did you know with that power we can accomplish abundantly far more than we could ever ask or imagine?  Have you ever had to do something that was really hard and you weren’t quite sure how you would get it done, and yet, you somehow were able to do it?  That is the power that is working within you. The Holy Spirit lives in each one of us and is ready and willing to take action anytime we need him too.  This is truly amazing to me.  It is amazing to me that God sent His only son down to earth to die on a cross for our sins and then when Jesus went back up to sit at the right hand of His Father, God sent us an advocate to guide us on our way.

This verse says the power within us is able to accomplish far more than we would be able to ask or imagine.  So, if we don’t know to ask or imagine it, how does the Holy Spirit know what we need help with?  They Holy Spirit has a direct link to your heart.  The Holy Spirit knows what we want better than we do.  When we think about what we want, we can get all caught up in our head wondering if we can do it, wondering if we should do it, wondering if it is ok to want this or that.  The Holy Spirit looks deep into our heart and knows what we want, probably even before we do.  Or maybe it isn’t that the Holy Spirit knows before we do, maybe it is just that the Holy Spirit can admit what we want sooner than we are ready too.  For instance, if we want to have a baby.  Maybe we aren’t quite ready to admit that we want a baby because having a baby can be scary and we might not feel ready for it.  Also, we might have this sense that we want to find a new job.  However, we don’t pray for it yet, because getting a new job can be scary too.  Even though our conscious self is not quite ready to pray for these things because they are scary, the Holy Spirit is aware that we want then and can start to pray for us.

The Holy Spirit can also help us do things that are very difficult.  Can you think back to a time when you had to get through something and you remember thinking to yourself that there was no way you could do it?  I have had plenty of these experiences.  I have had plenty of times when I have gone through something and I was sure I wasn’t going to make it through.  For instance, one time when Tony went to Germany to do his reserve time.  He went for 6 weeks to Germany every year for a few years and it was up to me to hold the fort down until he returned.  During this particular time in Germany I was having a lot of trouble with the boys at home.  One of them had gotten expelled from school,  and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do while he was home with me.  There wasn’t any talk about when the district would find him a new school.  It was a difficult time but I made it through because of the strength of the Holy Spirit.

The verse also says, “to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”  The power at work within us should get all the glory.  Sometimes we like to take credit for all that is going right in our lives, and we blame others for all that is going wrong.  Do you see anything wrong with this?  Do you see how this doesn’t give glory where glory belongs?  The Holy Spirit was given to us by God and the Holy Spirit is  the one that is living inside of us and giving us the strength to do all things.  When we take credit for the things that we couldn’t have done without the Holy Spirit, it is as if we don’t appreciate what He does for us.  Have you ever been working with someone in school or at work and they take all the credit for the whole project?  How did that make you feel?  Did you want to work with them again?  I wonder if the Holy Spirit feels like that when we take all the credit?

How can we give the glory to the Holy Spirit or to God?  We praise them and we have gratitude for them.  Also, we let others know what they have done for us.  When people comment on how strong your were through it all, you can say something like, “Thanks to the Holy Spirit,” or you can say, “all the glory goes to God.”  Whatever it is you want to say is good, just as long as you are giving the glory to God.  He does so much for us and I bet He is thanked very often for his generosity. How many times have we forgotten to stop and thank the Lord for all He has done?  Let’s try to develop a practice of gratitude and try to remember to give God the glory, He deserves it.

Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we love you and we are sorry for all the times when we did not give you the glory.  We are sorry for all the times we took the credit for the work of the Holy Spirit.  He is amazing and we didn’t mean to take away the glory for ourselves.  Lord, we are so grateful you sent your advocate to us to guide us and to give us power.  You are amazing.  You are the Lord of the Lords and we are so grateful to have you in our lives.  We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with our wills and in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  Tomorrow’s guest witness will be Beth.  I look forwarded to sharing her story with you.  Have a blessed day!
