Governor Gavin Newsom has a new budget proposal ready to go, but the lack of funding for public health has people scratching their heads, especially coming out of a pandemic (which isn’t all the way over yet, by the way).

As the state of California poises to open up on June 15, it does seem like there are a few reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Many areas in Sacramento have high vaccination rates, cases are down around the state, and San Francisco General Hospital is reporting zero inpatient COVID cases for the first time since the pandemic began.

Folks everywhere are preparing to get back to business as usual, as the Center for Disease Control loosens mask restrictions and California businesses begin to discuss maskless integration for vaccinated people. For many Californians, this is an exciting prospect, and the idea fo going back to life as usual is welcome, but some remain pensive.

Many Californians not only refuse the vaccine, but also are willing to believe dangerous lies that endanger the people around them. Now that most of us are vaxxed, we appear likely to be safe but what about our more vulnerable folks? Immunocompromised family and friends? Is it really time to just go right back to it? Can we trust ourselves as a society to do that yet?
