California Governor Gavin Newsom gave his state-of-the-state speech Tuesday night in Dodger Stadium, and the reception has been... mixed. Did he really "meet the moment" with COVID? How has he addressed homelessness, which was his pet issue in 2020? Although he didn't ever say the word “recall," it appears that it’s likely to move forward and is clearly at the front of his mind.

In happier news, advocates were victorious this week in convincing the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to cancel plans to expand the county jail. It's a big win for groups such as Decarcerate Sacramento and the People's Budget.

Finally, some attention has now been aimed at the Sacramento City Fire Department for allegedly being a hostile and unfriendly work environment for anyone who isn’t a cis-het, white frat guy--a giant shock no one could have anticipated. People of color and women are leaving the department and are not being quiet about it on their way out, putting the department on defense. Will the fire department be able to save itself from criticism similar to that leveled at law enforcement?
