32 - Commiefornia (1.17.2020)

We start this week with a quick recap of the hyped-up tiff between senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in the latest Democratic presidential debate. 

After that, we discuss the concerns of low- and middle-income Californians leaving the state, as described in a recent story in Capital Public Radio. Kempa takes a moment to creatively convey the perspective of the folks mentioned late in the story.

We then discuss the fact that Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas have been taking on some fantastic rhetoric -- implying that they will push for "right to housing" legislation, which would put weight onto municipalities to provide spaces for people experiencing homelessness to put their heads down at night.

We also briefly discuss the race to take Sacramento County Supervisor Sue Peters's seat, and how a win for a Democrat may mean successes for people experiencing homelessness.

We end with a call to empathy. Because that's what this is all about. When you see someone on the street, experiencing the lowest of lows, we hope that you can see yourself when you look them in the face. It's not easy. But it's incumbent on us all to see ourselves in one another.
