Goal's Seth Vertelney brings you the American women’s soccer news you need to know today.

The Olympics are finally here, and the U.S. women’s national team will begin their quest for the gold medal with a match against Sweden on Wednesday.

The U.S. is aiming to become the first defending Women’s World Cup champion to win an Olympic gold medal, having won the World Cup in France two years ago.

Sweden, ranked fifth in the world, will be a formidable opening challenge for the U.S. The Swedes knocked the U.S. out in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, marking the first time that the Americans failed to medal at an Olympic games.

Sweden also drew the U.S. 1-1 in April, marking the only time in head coach Vlatko Andonovski’s first 23 games in charge that his side failed to win.

Following their match against Sweden, the U.S. will face New Zealand and Australia in the group stage, as they look to take home their fifth Olympic gold medal.
