The job of the police may not be what we think it is.

SHOW NOTES

As I think through what could possibly be wrong with the not only the bad cops in this country I can't help but also wonder what is wrong with people who justify the actions of bad cops.

Is it possible we don't fully understand not only the role of the police and subsequent governing authorities but also what they should represent?

Governing Authorities

Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God. -- Romans 13:1

First off, we need to understand that any governing power that exist is because the very idea of it comes from God. It is built on a construct of morality. All morality, the very idea of it comes from God.When we think about the police and their duty, their responsibility and ultimate accountability we have to remember they are accountable to God!God is the FIRST governing authority and the Adam was the first human to receive a command as a governing authority when he was to watch and care for the Garden and all creatures within it.

Resisting AuthorityUsing Romans 13:2-3 to justify the actions of bad cops.

So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval. -- Romans 13:2-3

Police are not the entire governing authority over a society. They are only part of it(1 component out of 3 concerning the criminal justice system). When the police exercise judgement (death) because someone is resisting arrest they are now operating out of their role.
Protect and ServeThe LAPD created the motto Protect and Serve which other police departments across the country adopted. This stems from the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.

As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve the community; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality, and justice.

The Code of Ethics hasn't been updated since 1957 which was when it was first adopted by the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police).

Hippocratic Oath ConceptSgt. Jeremiah P. Johnson Darien (CT) Police DepartmentHe wrote an article (https://www.policefoundation.org/a-hippocratic-oath-for-policing/) that calls for a corporate Hippocratic Oath.
The Police Don't Have To Protect AnyoneNot only do the police have an outdated code of ethics, they also do NOT have a constitutional duty to protect you.See suit filed by students in 2018's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. Reject by federal judge.Supreme CourtIn the cases DeShaney vs. Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales, the supreme court has ruled that police agencies are not obligated to provide protection of citizens.
