The families' perspectives and roles are critical. It’s not something that’s taught a whole lot. You’re growing up with them and their career. Without conversation and explanation about certain things, your child could internalize them in various ways.There need to be conversations about the importance of flexibility; you need to understand that every day is a little bit different when you’re a police officer, so you need to have that flexibility.

Erin Craw, Ph.D., earned her doctorate in communication from Chapman University in Southern California, emphasizing health and interpersonal communication. Her research interests are at the intersection of health and interpersonal communication regarding social support, stigma, and resilience. Her dissertation explored police officers’ preferences for support and factors influencing mental health-related disclosure decisions. As the daughter of a police officer and granddaughter of a firefighter, she has a true passion for research that informs mental health-related interventions for first responders, enhances communication surrounding mental health, and improves access to support.
