It is very rare that we have both the first reading, generally from the new testament, and the Gospel reading having themes that echo each other. Today it does. In the first reading in the second letter from Paul to Timothy. We hear somewhat later in Paul’s life something about the hardship of the apostolic calling. The gospel reading continues the whole drama of the role of the good shepherd. Because good shepherd isn’t the only one operating in the pastoral field. There are also evil spirits to distract from already embrace of the gospel. So Jesus warn against the thieves, rogues and villains coming to disturb the sheep.
