Shepherds today are modern. Roam around in bikes while dogs keep the sheep disciplined. But the sort of shepherd  Jesus is profiling in today’s John gospel is one that is on a much smaller scale and who intimately knows his sheep and  Jesus uses this as metaphor for the way in which we relate to him.
