Movie Night is a cinematic journey into our favorite music films and concert documentaries. Download the pod, stream the movie, and sync up to our winning commentary. It's like we're all hanging out again.
It's been called one of the greatest disasters in live music history, and not just because Kid Rock was on the bill. This week, we revive our Movie Night format (previously known as QuaranTunes & Tumblers) to return to July 1999 and the infamous disaster that was Woodstock 99. The HBO documentary Woodstock 99: Peace, Love and Rage covers the travesty in harrowing detail, unfolding over three blazing hot days and nights of nonstop performances and heaving mosh pits. Though the festival purported to echo the counterculture idealism of the 1969 original instead devolves into riots, looting and sexual assaults. How much do the filmmakers get right? Who are the Umbilical Brothers? And are Trader Joe's knock-off Takis as good as the original. Watch and tune in to find out.
CW: Frank discussions of violence, sexual assault, racism, victim blaming, and death
