In 1968 in Scotswood, an impoverished area of Newcastle, a city in the north-east of England, long before Geordie Shore put the city on the map for ‘radgie’ and ‘mortal’ behaviour, fear had taken hold of the working-class residents. The area was full of abandoned and derelict properties, and on 26th May, 4-year-old Martin Brown had been found dead in the upstairs of one such house. The coroner had not been able to find any signs of foul play, and his death had been ruled as natural causes. It was not until 2 months later, when 3 year old Brian Howe was found dead on a remote patch of grassland, known colloquially as the ‘tin lizzy’ that suspicions were raised. It was determined that little Brian had died as a result of asphyxiation, this prompted a review into Martin’s death, and it was found that he too was likely strangled to death.
