Michael Eric Dyson is a brilliant public intellectual and a great friend. I love talking with him because he’s genius and because he loves Blackness so deeply. Here we dive into some of the messages in his new book Entertaining Race where he talks about the history of Black Americans being entertainers on every level. We are performative on a celebrity level from music to screen to sports, but we are also amazingly and beautifully performative on every level. Regular Black folks talk and walk and greet each other in ways that are expressive and performative and beautiful. We talk through all of that.
