Antebellum is a powerful and triggering new film starring Janelle Monae as a modern woman trapped in a slavery nightmare. Some people will like this film, some will hate it. I watched it twice even though at times it was hard to watch the intense slavery scenes but it should be hard to watch slavery scenes. But filmmakers need to be thoughtful about why they’re taking us through slavery because it’s dredges up deep, painful feelings. Bush and Renz are a couple and the co-directors of this controversial film and I spoke to them both about what they made and why.
