#91: Meet Jason Bee, Director, Producer, Writer and Actor of the Movie Donovan – a movie about bipolar disorder

We welcome Jason Bee who released a movie called Donovan, which is about a recently divorced father and the struggles of bipolar disease.
Jason stars in the movie as himself about himself.
He tells us that when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 90’s he didn’t take it seriously and used it as an excuse to do stupid things, sex, drugs and alcohol to name a few.
In 2007 he had a massive psychotic breakdown and it was in that moment that he was either going to kill himself or be a father to his son. He chose the latter.
We go back to his chaotic childhood and learn that his Dad left the family when Jason was 3 years old which left him with severe abandonment issues.
He wrote, produced, directed and acted in the movie and even wrote some of the songs. Both his sons also act in the movie.
It took 7 years from start to finish before releasing the movie.
The movie has received many amazing awards.
He tells us that his wife of 11 years recently left him and blindsided him. This combined with the movie not taking off faster than he anticipated threw him into a severe depression that he is
working his way out of with the help of a therapist.
Jason’s 2 children are the reason that keep him from doing the unimaginable.
