“What is the difference between Feminist, Ethical and Female-Friendly Porn?

In an industry traditionally dominated by men as directors and viewers, porn has evolved to begin to include women – and transfolk – as a creators of porn and as an audience.

Whether it be for profit of increasing sales to an untapped market and/ or for the passion of including those whose desires and sexualities have been left out, the options in porn have significantly changed. Many existing studios have set up a new arm of their business to cater to this market and other companies have emerged to specifically target this group of consumers. With some similarities and differences in markets and goals, they all define themselves differently. Female-Friendly Porn:

Also known as “couples porn” or “romance porn”, this style targets mainly straight women to watch alone or with a partner. The films are generally a little softer than mainstream porn, with fewer facials (men ejaculating on women’s faces) and anal scenes, more kissing and more sensuality. Many films have a romantic element. They are generally heterosexual and the performers are usually white, thin and young and follow gender stereotypes. In the big studios, the performers are the same ones used on the mainstream sides of the industry. Sometimes the directors are women.

Some of these female-friendly films are also labeled lesbian. These are also softer in terms of style of sex, using the same performers following stereotypes of lesbian looks (feminine) and behaviour. Since the advent of Fifty Shades of Grey, the themes have begun to include some kink, but gender lines are still generally the same. They tend to pay more attention to detail in the filming and include more female pleasure than the mainstream options.

Ethical Porn:

Discussion of ethical porn is on the rise, although few companies themselves are using this branding per se. The ethical standards that they espouse are generally that performers are paid a fair wage with fair labour practices, given a choice about the kinds of sex that they have and with whom, and what kinds of safer sex supplies that they wish to use. Some employ a revenue-sharing model between producer and performers.

Ethical porn concerns itself mainly with the working conditions of the performers-ensuring fair labour practices so that the viewer can be assured that there is no trafficking, pressure to perform or lack of consent on set.

Feminist porn:

Feminist porn takes ethical porn and female-friendly porn one step further. It includes the ethics of fair labour practices and working conditions, respect for performers, and offering choices of kinds of sex that they wish to have. It strives to appeal to women and trans folk of all varieties as well as men, who also often appreciate the alternative option.

In addition, feminist porn concerns itself also with expanding the boundaries of representation in film: more diversity of bodies, sexes and gender expressions, desires and sexual acts. Rather than espousing the same old stereotypes and scenes, especially of women and marginalized communities, it reflects many more types of people and pleasure in its films. It strives to portray all of the performers having power in their pleasure, even if that power is to choose to give it away. In essence, feminist porn strives to appeal to those left out by the mainstream as well as mainstream viewers, create positive business practices with its performers and reflect the diversity of desires and pleasures experienced in the population in general.” -https://www.feministpornawards.com/what-is-feminist-porn/difference-feminist-ethical-female-friendly-porn/
