Rev. David Boisclair, pastor of Faith and Bethesda Lutheran Churches in North St. Louis County, Missouri, joins host Rev. AJ Espinosa to study Numbers 31.

We struggle with the brutality of Numbers 31, but we must learn to be humble like Job and not challenge God’s authority. In the end, we see that God punishes the Midianites justly while also preventing further bloodshed. Moreover, He spares the young women and allows them to join the people of Israel, just as He would later do with Rahab of Jericho and Ruth of Moab, incorporating them into the family of the Messiah.

The rules on how to divide the plunder show God’s provision for His people, and particularly how the whole people of God share in the victory. For us Christians, although we do not ultimately fight in the battle, we share in the victory of our Lord Jesus, who plunders death and Hades to give us the riches of resurrected life.
