All of these things happen. The disciples are ‘exceedingly sorrowful’ which isn’t that they are sad that Jesus is prophesying this- they are sorrowful because they don’t understand why this is the storyRemember- These are oppressed people who have been waiting for a savior to save them. The part of this story I want to focus on today is this- “the Third day he will”Do you have movies, songs, books you read repeatedly because of how they affect you? If Christ is not risen the Bible says “we are of all men the most pitiable.”McKim- Consider this: approximately 40 percent of the first three (synoptic) Gospels focus on the last week of Jesus’ life. That percentage increases to about 66 percent when we come to the Gospel of John. If the Gospels were simply biographies of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we would expect a more balanced treatment of the various seasons of his life. But that is not what we find. A vastly disproportionate focus is given over to the last week of Jesus’ life, as if to say, “Whatever else you miss, please, don’t miss this.”Preaching about, ingesting, understanding, walking, living, believing, trusting, rejoicing, resting, and celebrating the resurrection is central to our faith! In three days he will- affects all of our life!If the Gospels spend that much time on it- I don’t think there’s anything wrong with us spending more time on it!

First of all- This is where I think that many Christians miss the mark- they talk to people about Jesus without leading with the death, burial and resurrection- central to our faith- this is the foundation

This is so important? Because without Jesus death burial and resurrection we are under wrathJohn 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”We must believe this- or God’s wrath is upon us- or to say- because we believe this- God’s wrath is not upon us! He prophesies the end of his ministry-  Betrayal, death, resurrection. All of these things happen.
The disciples are ‘exceedingly sorrowful’ which isn’t that they are sad that Jesus is prophesying this- they are sorrowful because they don’t understand why this is the story
Remember- These are oppressed people who have been waiting for a savior to save them.
The part of this story I want to focus on today is this- “the Third day he will”
Do you have movies, songs, books you read repeatedly because of how they affect you? We all do
The resurrection is the most important event in all of Christianity. Period. That should be our thing
1 Cor 15:17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!
And that’s true! If Christ is not risen the Bible says “we are of all men the most pitiable.”
McKim- Consider this: approximately 40 percent of the first three (synoptic) Gospels focus on the last week of Jesus’ life. That percentage increases to about 66 percent when we come to the Gospel of John. If the Gospels spend that much time on it- I don’t think there’s anything wrong with us spending more time on it!

The Third day He will ”- The most important thing you need to know
The truth of the historical fact of Christ’s resurrection is the most important thing you need to know about being Christian and following Christ- It’s the beginning of our Faith.
Paul- when with the Corinthian church said this- 1 Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know and anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
Now you have to understand the literary license that Paul uses here- He obviously didn’t just preach the resurrection when he was in Corinth. He preached much more than that.
There is a lot to learn about Jesus- a ton- and Paul covers a lot of it- but in this instance he’s saying, this is the most important thing- nothing is more important than this.
When I was in the Army- right place, right time, in the right uniform 99% taken care of.
This is why he said-  1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

First of all- This is where I think that many Christians miss the mark- they talk to people about Jesus without leading with the death, burial and resurrection- central to our faith- this is the foundation

This is so important? Because without Jesus death burial and resurrection we are under wrath
John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
We must believe this- or God’s wrath is upon us- or to say- because we believe this- God’s wrath is not upon us! That’s where we want to be- living in peace with God0
1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
That’s what the resurrection does! Puts us in a righteous relationship with God- so we can be in relationship with the father- we can communicate and live in his grace and mercy
If Jesus didn’t resurrect, we are still in our sins! We are still under the wrath of God!
1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.- This is the truth that we preach, believe and live- he is the PAYMENT for SIN
Can you see how this is the most important thing? Nothing else matters if this isn’t true
Plane- Don’t crash, Football- don’t lose the ball Job- Show up Gun fight- have a gun
SO for you- when People ask why you’re a Christian- because Jesus rose from the Grave..
There’s always so much more to ANYTHING that we do or believe- but there’s always a no. 1.
This truth of the resurrection gives us this blessing- “I don’t know much -but the third day he did”
Galatians 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
We are delivered from this present evil age because of what Jesus did- we are above this world and not of this world- when Jesus said “on the third day he will” it happened and it changed the world
The resurrection is why we preach repentance-  Luke 24:46-47 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

“The Third day He will ” The only Stumbling block to men
Here’s a reality- many people are not Christians- or many Christians do not experience the power of the resurrection because it is such a stumbling block
1 Corinthians 1:22-25READ
It’s a stumbling block to everyone because of what it means- Christ is messiah, Christ is King, Christ is Lord. It demands a response. Jesus said “on the third day he will” and he did so now what
If you can discount the cross you can discount the whole of Christianity
I didn’t say it but its true- Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic or Lord- He said he will- he did.
Liar because he said he could forgive sin and that he was God. But if he wasn’t then that would make him a certifiable lunatic because who says they can forgive sin and be God but a crazy
You can’t just say “that Jesus was a good dude” No. If he isn’t Lord he’s a lying lunatic.
1 Peter 2:8 “A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.” If he didn’t rise- he’s a whacko
Why is it such an offense? Because it means that we are immoral- we are sinners
It means that Hell is real and that a judgment is coming.
It means that we aren’t good enough by ourselves to make it to heaven
The Bible says we must be born again of the water and the spirit- to be a ‘new creation’
That’s offensive to self contained self righteous person who has agency
To the person who says they are living a moral life apart from Christ
You can have a moral, fulfilling life apart from Christ- you can hide behind stuff and substances
But the Cross says- you’re still not good enough to make it to heaven on your own- The Cross.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
They think we’re fools- They think that we have lost our minds- and we have! We are no longer people who think for ourselves- we don’t have our own thoughts and our own desires- our only goal is to please him.
We are the ones who “take it too seriously” and “ are being controlled”
Yes- yes that’s true- I do take it seriously and I am being controlled- I am actually possessed.
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
This prophecy- Isaiah 8:14 He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
But we can’t let it be a stumbling block- Praise God for the resurrection- Praise God for the power of the Holy spirit that raised him from the grave. Praise God on the third day he will came true!
Romans 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
We shall live and surely not die because of the Cross of Christ!

“The Third day He will ” is The only thing you need to boast
We currently live in a time where many people want to be famous and work at being famous
It used to be you could be the best at something in your small little town but now you got to be the best of the best to garner a large following on Social Media or you’re nothing.
People want to boast about their job, their assets, stuff, accomplishments, records, achievements, they want to be known for what they do and what they have done- to differentiate themselves from the herd- be seen as special. Stand out from the crowd- “I am the best at this”
Most rotations hanging from a power drill, fastest to break 3 balloons with your back 6.84, Most watermelons chopped on the stomach in one minute 148, Most toilet seats broken by someones head in one minute- 46. These are some serious records. Whirly ball champion- satin jacket
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
That means- in your life- no matter what you’ve accomplished- no matter what you’ve done- NOTHING is worth boasting in more than the cross of Christ- If it is- your heart is wrong.
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
See- when you internalize that you are dead- that your life is no longer about you- you only boast in the cross of Christ- You don’t boast in yourself you boast in “on the third day he did”
The only reason you are able to live the life that you have is because of the Cross-
He loved you and gave himself for you- so you could boast in HIM and HIM alone!
I don’t even live for myself anymore- I just live for Jesus- He loved me, gave himself for me- I give myself to him- That’s the only boast I have- to live for Jesus because he died for me.
Because of this Bible truth- Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
I’m no longer a slave to sin because he rose on the third day! This body of sin is done away with! I’m not longer bound by my past and my future is bright!
What does it mean to you?
Are you boasting in yourself, your accomplishments, your stuff, your job, or the 3rd day?
This is one of the greatest things about being part of a Church- no one cares about what you’ve done and who you are and what you have- No one is impressed- we’re all a bunch of dead people alive in Christ- we win by losing here- elevating Christ and not ourselves.
Check yourself- where do you direct the conversations? To be about you?
Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh,
We don’t even trust our flesh- it can’t lead us into righteousness- only the resurrection!
Here’s the issue- we all have hurts- and we overcompensate for these hurts by elevating our worldly accomplishments to try and fill the void in our hearts. We think our value is found in what we have and what we do instead of whose we are- INSTEAD of “on the third day he did”
Gal 5:24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Interview with Mike Tyson “Anyone who says money can buy happiness has never had a lot”
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

“The Third day He will ” is The only power you need to live
I mean really- what are we all really trying to do? We’re trying to live this life to the best of our ability- And if you’re really living, at what ever place that you are- it’s a struggle to keep up.
And if you haven’t figured it out- it’s really hard to do it on your own strength. You just cant
You try to do things on your own strength- you realize that you can’t do it.
Philippians 3:8-10 READ
Power comes from counting everything a loss- I only want Jesus
Counting everything as rubbish- I don’t value anything but Jesus
Know the power of his resurrection conformed to his death- As Jesus died we must die.
But how do we do that?
1 Peter 4:1-2 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
every decision you make and all that how you live- when you die to your desires- you feel the power of Christ inside of you sustaining you as you walk according to his will- because on the 3rd day he did.
So in your marriage you have to talk about it- we are going to honor God- tithe, time, service
With you kids- you have to talk about it- Talking to my kids years ago about why we don’t go to Hawaii for spring break- we tithe- we want to honor God and that comes at a price.
2 Timothy 2:11-12 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him.
12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.
Because here’s a big issue- is that many people try to ‘put on Christ’ without being baptized into his death- they are simultaneously trying to live for themselves while trying to live for Jesus
Romans 6:3-4 READ
You got to check who you are living for- what your plans are. It’s like marriage. My Saturdays don’t belong to me anymore. My nights don’t either. I have to confer with my wife what the plans are and what she needs and wants from me before I do anything.
The next time you find yourself in a funk- don’t reach for that book, movie or song, reach for that Bible- remind yourself- on the third day he will- and he did- and it will be an encouragement to you.
