In a recent article, entitled The Dictatorship of the Proletariat and the Death of the Left, Chris Cutrone wrote: “Today, the ostensible ‘Left’ — the avowed ‘socialists’ — have abandoned the goal of the dictatorship of the proletariat, either in words or in fact, the latter by reinterpreting the dictatorship of the proletariat to mean the governing of capitalism by sociologically working-class political parties in a welfare-state or so-called ‘social democracy’.” What is the dictatorship of the proletariat? Why is it a critical concept for Marxists? And why has it been ‘abandoned’ by the contemporary left?
