The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #433: Working on Custom Lego Minifigures from Spacecamp (1986)

In this week’s episode, I thought I’d give a sneak peak of a project I’ve been working on behind the scenes for the past few months – Lego minifigures of the six main characters from the 1986 film, Spacecamp, one of my favorite films as a child.  I’ve made three sets so far for this first run, and like its predecessors, definitely required the use of magnifying glasses for the tiny details.  Here, though, I was able to do the whole process of designing the flight suit (the detailed part) in Photoshop.  The hardest part was trying to more or less match the color of the blue plastic (azure, per Lego) to the shade of blue coming out of the printer.

The color of blue I found to make the legs, arms, and torso of the minifigures.  The actual color is less bright than shown on screen, meaning it look a lot of trial and error to find a shade that more of less matched …

… since the part that needed more intricate customization, the torsos with details of the flight suits, needed to be designed separately, then printed out.

Today, I was working on the cases.  As with other similar projects I’ve done like this, the figures get housed in little foam beds that fit inside a plastic carrying / display case.

And like similar projects, this one will be sold to raise funds for the US Space and Rocket Foundation so kids can more easily attend Spacecamp (the cost has gone up quite a bit in the 30 years since I was there).  More coming soon as this project get wrapped up!

Until then, thanks for listening!

Update: the figures are now all done are up for sale on Etsy.
