This week, we unfortunately lost a great actor, Alan Arkin, who I will always remember best as Peevy from The Rocketeer.  Aside from maybe Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid, I can’t think of a better mentor figure.  Peevy was a mentor to Cliff in the comic as well (based off of Dave Stevens’ own mentor, Johnny Quest creator Doug Wildey), so it made sense that when the comic became a movie, that same dynamic would be preserved with Alan Arkin’s character providing some fatherly guidance and reality testing to Billy Campbell’s portrayal of Cliff’s youthful energy and enthusiasm.  Check out this scene for a great example:

The other, somewhat related role, where he is also a kind of mentor is as a psychoanalyst to Martin Blank, the conflicted assassin (John Cusack) who is invited to his high school reunion in his hometown on Grosse Point, Michigan (I misspoke on the pod; since Chicago is often used as the setting of 80s films, I said that since that was what came to mind first, but the real Grosse Pointe is actually in a different, nearby state).  Such as great scene:

I also recall seeing him, much younger in the 70s screwball comedy The In Laws.  Another hilarious scene:

RIP!  Please thank any mentors you have in your life while you can.

And thanks for listening!
