For Episode 48 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Dan Forrest of Forrest Goaltening Professional Training and Skills Development. Dan and I discussed how he approaches coaching younger goaltenders and shared what he feels is the best way for any goaltender to do in preparation for the upcoming tryout season.
The biggest takeaway I had from our conversation was that as coaches we need to focus just as much, if not at times more, of our time and effort into developing a goalie's mental game and toughness as we do their technical development. Sure refining footwork and save selection is a good thing, but if a goaltender can't handle the stress of the position, what good are those technical skills?
