I sit down with my mom, Karen Cheney, for a conversation about her first bike in the eighth episode of Tell Me About Your Bike. We discuss the freedom of having your own bicycle in a small town, and the pleasures of getting out of the house as a teenager.

I recorded the interview with my mom using the built-in microphone on my Roland Edirol R-09HR digital recorder. I’ve strapped the Edirol to locomotives and bicycles. I’ve used it to record my choir at church and my mom in her RV. It’s an amazingly versatile recorder, and well worth buying.

If you enjoy the essays by Paul Fournel that I read, please buy a copy of “Need for the Bike,” and give it to a cyclist or your favorite bike mechanic for Christmas.
