Stay Ahead of Cyber Threats: 15 Expert Cybersecurity DefenCe Tips for SMBs

Hi! I'm Mark Riddell and I'm here with the Techcess podcast's 100th episode.

This week - a cyber security masterclass with expert tips. We're here to empower small and medium-sized business owners through an action-packed journey to defend their businesses against cyber threats, uncovering the surprising irony that prevention is cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of an attack.

Email Phishing Prevention

Email phishing! Sounds fishy and indeed is a typical bait-and-switch situation that the netizens often fall prey to. It's a clever cyberhack where the attacker disguises as a reliable entity to scam the recipient into providing confidential information.

Quite unsettling, isn't it?

The straightforward solution here is training the skill of recognising phishing attempts and a substantial part of what we do at m3 Networks.

I'm hoping my episode emphasises on this for you.

Reach out to me, Mark Riddell, on LinkedIn here if you want to discuss more.

Remember, awareness is the first step to prevention.

I'm bringing you up to date with some alarming statistics about the number of cyber breaches and compromises hailing from phishing, and I'm underscoring the need for training to spot such hackers.

The Importance of Security Assessments

So you might ask, why are security assessments integral to a business's cybersecurity measures? Think of this as a medical check-up but for your digital assets.

Similar to how a doctor identifies health issues and suggests relevant treatments during a regular check-up, a security assessment helps businesses pinpoint vulnerabilities in their cyber systems and provides solutions to strengthen those areas.

And we all know, prevention is always better (and more cost-effective) than a cure, right?

Now, coming from my experience, it's vital to not just carry out a solitary assessment at the start of your business, but to incorporate regular checks into your business workflow.

If the term 'security assessment' hasn't cropped up in your discussions with an IT provider, it might be high time to switch to a more aware one.

Because just like trends, cyber threats also evolve over time, and continual assessments help keep your business in pace with them.

Backup as an Essential Part of Cyber security

Why should backing up your work be a mandatory practice?

Just imagine, you're typing out a report, and suddenly your computer crashes. If you've been saving your work periodically, you'd still have most of it intact, right?

The same principle applies to businesses, but at a much larger scale, with much more at stake.

Many businesses still rely on pure luck, and two thumb drives, to back their sensitive information. In this episode I'm recommending a far safer strategy.
