In this brief episode, Dr. Shaw discusses the notion of letting someone "off the hook." Dr. Shaw doesn't believe that when someone is exhibiting negative behavior that we should not provide an excuse that it's okay to be that way... we should not attribute behavior from our children, for example, to a "phase" that they are going through. When one is angry or cranky, that feeling is an acceptable feeling and all feelings can't be helped, but it is not okay for that angry or moody person to not be accountable for their behavior. Sometimes, it's helpful to point out to a child when we are in a negative space, we still cannot use that mood or feeling to hurt someone else.
