The Author

Jude Hayland is a British author born in London but now resides in Winchester a small city down towards the south coast of England. Winchester is known for its medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur. Jude also spends a considerable amount of time on the Mediterranean island of Crete where her family have a home. Learning modern Greek, is shall we say, proving challenging at best.

Having graduated in English Literature Jude began writing short stories for Women’s magazines at the same time as teaching at secondary schools in the 1980s-1990s. She was published extensively in the UK and internationally for many years. After graduating with an M.A. with Distinction in Creative Writing, Jude began to explore writing full length fiction stories and to date has published three novels which will feature in this podcast. A fourth book is close to being completed. With all that is going on in her life, Jude still finds time to teach English and Drama on a part-time bases, as well as taking creative writing courses and workshops for budding authors. Jude’s novels have been well received with book groups and those who like the genre fields of Literary/commerce crossover, families and relationships.

The Books

Miller Street SW22

A story of loss, love, guilt and ultimately hope and redemption.

This book is the third book Jude has written and was published in January 2021. The Book shadows the lives of five neighbours that live on Miller St in London SW22. Coincidentally all the neighbours moved into the street in the autumn of 2005 primarily for a new start in life. The main Characters are Catherine Wells, Sam and Lydia Cough, Violet Lawrence and Frances Chater. The daily lives of these unique and individual characters, all with their own inner strengths and faults is fascinating to watch as the various events unfold leading up to a centenary street party. As the deadline for the street party nears and the committee Frances cagouled them to form using her domineering personality takes hold; relationships between the five begin to immerge. What they discover about themselves and how the past has played a part for some of them in getting to where they are, and what inconceivable destinies await them in the future is truly breath-taking. For me this book has all the tension needed to keep the reader turning the pages. As expected from Jude Hayland it’s beautifully written with tenderness and thrills all built in.

The Legacy of Mr Jarvis

A book of intrigue, deception and deceit. Who was Freddie Jarvis? And what was the relationship between this man and Mary’s mother Ida.

This book is the second book Jude has written; it was published in October 2019. The storyline starts with, for Mary the main protagonist a sudden house move from London to the South Coast, in 1966, but why? Mary who’s twelve at the time, doesn’t question her parents Jack and Ida’s reason for this move. But, forty years later after her mother’s death Mary decides to confront her suspicions. For, throughout her entire life she was led to believe that she was an only child, or was she? What Mary uncovers leaves her profoundly affected, the deceit and deception is traumatising, half-sisters? Again, who was Freddie Jarvis and was she, Mary, part of his legacy.

Counting The Ways

Counting the Waves dissects the fears that cloud our lives from failure, loss, regret and transience. The story is set in both London and an idyllic Mediterranean island in the 1980’s at a time when the talk of money particularly in London was all the fashion. Grace Barnes doesn’t fit into that Yuppie society and is passionate about reading. Archie Copeland is of a similar mindset, so much so the two of them get married. Hester, Grace’s mother seeing that her daughter is about to get married reflects on her own dysfunctional marriage to Fergus who left thirty years ago to live a simple remote life on a Welch hillside. However, his appearance at Grace’s wedding opens old feelings. For a short spell, Fergus’ reincarnation appears to have an influence on Grace, but then her own relationship with Archie wains due to all kinds of issues. A holiday to the Mediterranean on the surface appears to be the answer for Grace and Archie. But his disappearance casts a whole different outlook to their marriage, what Grace uncovers about Archie as she tries to find him is not what she expected to find. Archie meanwhile is forced to confront years of self-delusion, which is hard for him, but his absence forces Grace, Hester and Fergus to face up to their own fractured relationships. This is a book with many twists and turns like any good book should be.
