The Author

MaryEllen was born in northern Ontario, Canada to Italian Immigrants parents who emigrated to Canada from Italy after WW2. Like most first generation Canadians the choice was driven by the prospects of a better life both financially and circumstantial. The path that lay in front of her parents was far from easy, MaryEllen’s father died when she was ten years old leaving her mother whose native tongue wasn’t English struggling emotionally and financially with the prospects of raising a young family on her own, juggling multiple low paid jobs and balancing motherhood is no mean fate for any woman placed in that position. 

Early memories of relative impoverishment have been the driving force behind much of MaryEllen’s own life, her determination to succeed both financially and as a mother to her own children Kevin (24) and Erika (21) is what she gets out of bed for each day. Mary Ellen has been married for thirty-one years to a man she best describes as a bit of a spend thrift, especially when it comes to one of her spending ideological schemes. MaryEllen has done a variety of jobs to make sure the family accounts balance, particularly a social worker, though in her words not so much monetarisation rewarding, but enriching in so many other ways. Trying new ideas and projects to inject and infuse a sustainable interest in life is another core aspect of MaryEllen’s life hence the reason for her undertaking the task of writing this book, MaryEllen sees this an adventure, a new path to grow in her life, her husband reaction is, how much is this jaunt going to cost, and here she goes again. Oh, the joys of marriage, you can’t beat it.

The Book

This is a short book of approximately forty-four pages that are highly illustrated with appropriate and vivid illustrations that sublimely support the overall narrative of the book, that being young adults can find motivating forces both within themselves and the environment around them. For me the book is aimed at 7–10-year-olds. What’s fascinating in the story is how a yellow hi-vis jacket transforms the main character MaryEllen from being stuck in life to becoming a confident youngster following a different path in life. Lockdown had a profound affect on MaryEllen like so many youngsters not being able to go out and see their friends, but how MaryEllen adapted after Lockdown is surprising.
