Episode 54 - John Carpenter's The Thing

Welcome back people, to yet another fantastic episode of the Talkin' TV podcast!!!! We're about to get started with the next in a long line of events that we've done for the channel, and boy, have we done a lot. In this year, our second season alone, we have moved to Youtube, recapped ranked and reviewed every movie in the MCU, started our TV recap show and collaborated with more guests than we can count. And now, we're about to beging SHOCK-tober, in which we on several of our fellow Youtuber's channels will be watching a horror movie each weekend, and will be wrapping up at the end of the month by watching the classic 1978 "Halloween" on Halloween. And we're kicking this month off with another John Carpenter movie, to me his magnum opus, The Thing.  We weren't originally going to discuss this movie this week, but Chris had never seen it, so I figured now would be as good a time as any to discuss it. John Carpenter is an interesting filmmaker, and has become a bit of a cult head in a way, helping to write some absolute classics. But with this film, I would say he achieves something that precious few filmmakers have, in that he crafts a slasher movie with an actually menacing foe, and actually relateable batch of characters and a setting that only raises the tension with each passing minute. In this episode, Chris & Dom discuss how the setting helps to add to the film's overall sense of dread, how the creature actually operates and how that causes the cast of characters to unravel and come apart, and mostly how this film works primarily because all the right steps are taken at every level to make this a good story above all else. It all works in service, to me, to make this the greatest horror film ever made.  It's all covered here, only on Talkin' TV!!!
