Rust Is Twitch's New Among Us After Streamers Resurrect Its Popularity

Twitch has a way of resurrecting old games. This time it's a 7 year old survival game called rust.

From screen rant

The PC game has had a long development history; it released in early access back in 2013 and spent five years in that unfinished state before finally seeing a full release in 2018. Now that it's finally been completed, many are wondering what's next for the game. It had been planned for a console release last year, but after that was delayed, fans of the game are wondering when it might arrive on PS4 and PS5.

Rust has been quietly scraping by for years now, but recently, it has seen a startling resurgence on Twitch. In recent days the obscure survival game topped the charts for most views on the streaming platform, beating out titans like Minecraft. At the time of this writing it's still sitting at a respectable second place, with 612k viewers to its name. The game owes this sudden resurgence to several big-name streamers who have suddenly expressed renewed interest in it thanks to content drops that are planned for January 7th.

Symphonic - How do you think indie devs could better utilize twitch to promote their games?

Multiple Twitch outages causing streams lags, chat malfunctions, more

Streaming giant twitch has had its hands full in the first few days of this new year just keeping its service up and running.

From Dexerto.com

Since mid December 2020 and into the new year, Twitch users have been reporting site errors from small hiccups to the site being entirely down at times. While these issues have been brief in duration, they’ve been affecting multiple people at the same time.

“We are working to resolve the issues causing the site not loading correctly. Thank you for your patience,” the Twitch support page said on January 2. It had once again gone down for some people before picking back up again.

This has been a recurring theme for the site. There’s been three major occurrences in the last seven days that’s been a focal point of discussion among the community.

These errors come in light of reports of increased ads for people who use the uBlock Origin plugin and the prevailing notion is that these outages are the result of Twitch’s ongoing fight against these programs.

It should also be noted that the platform has been increasingly implementing new add ons and experimental features to Twitch which could also be affecting the performance of the site.

Nikki - What are you making of these constant outages? It's not just twitch lately either. What do you think is going on?

Twitch will change the face of PogChamp every 24 hours

Twitch removed its popular PogChamp emote a couple of days ago after the person on which it was based — Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez — posted some tweets encouraging more mob violence after the riot at the Capitol. The spirit of PogChamp, however, will live on: today, Twitch announced that it would cycfacele through different versions of the emote every 24 hours, starting today.

The reason PogChamp was popular was because it was the site’s global hype emote: when anything cool happened on Twitch, you could be sure to see people pogging in the chat.

Stump - Does the rotating Pog emote cheapen the emote or do you think it will make it more popular?

4. Facebook ordered to pay $4.7M to Italian developer over copycat feature

Like many great tech giants before them, facebook has stolen someone else's work. Not like this is the first time.

From the Verge

Facebook has been ordered to pay €3.83 million or $4.72 million in damages to an Italian developer over the social network’s “Nearby” feature. Reuters reports that the Milan-based appeals court upheld a 2019 ruling saying Facebook had copied the feature from developer Business Competence’s Faround app.

The case dates back to 2012. That year, Business Competence launched Faround which was designed to help users find Facebook friends near their location. The app quickly gained ground in the Italian market, Reuters previously reported. However, just months later, Facebook launched its own Nearby feature, which also competed with the likes of Foursquare and Yelp, and downloads of Faround reportedly plummeted.

The Italian software developer responded by filing a lawsuit in 2013, and Reuters reported that the court issued a preliminary ruling in its favor in 2016, which was made public in 2017. Facebook agreed to discontinue the feature in Italy while it appealed the ruling, but subsequent courts have sided with Business Competence.

Nikki - Does this really do anything to FB? Clearly its not a lot of money for them.

5. Nintendo Removes Hundreds of Fan Games With DMCA Takedown

Despite what you might think, DMCA Rules aren't just for ruining your Twitch Stream. Sometimes they are used to stop people from creating fun games for you to play on your twitch stream.

From the piece

Following a mass DMCA takedown order from Nintendo, 379  fan-made games have been removed from games hosting service Game Jolt, including many free-to-play titles.

Game Jolt is a website that hosts free and commercial video games for download. Sometimes indie games are sold on the website alongside the Epic Games Store and Steam, while other times, gamers make fan-made follow-ups to their favorite titles such as Undertale.

"The web site at gamejolt.com generates revenue from advertising banners displayed on the site and advertisements played while users wait for the games to load," Nintendo's statement says. "We would appreciate our expeditious removal of all infringing content."

The company has a legal team specifically geared towards anti-piracy and copyright infringement that seeks out even hobbyists and indie developers "to give all legally-sold Nintendo games a chance to succeed," Nintendo's legal page states. In the past, Nintendo targeted Super Smash Bros. modders for tampering with its software with costume and skin mods.

Symph - Could we be sued just for talking about this? Nintendo is aggressive with this sort of thing. Should streamers be worried?

6. Minecraft Earth servers to close down this June

Covid lockdowns have changed our way of life. This however may be the last straw.

From gamesradar,

Minecraft Earth, the alternate reality mobile game where players could recreate the feeling of playing Minecraft in the real world, will shut down at the end of June due to COVID-19.

An official announcement on the Minecraft website reads "Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play – two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to re-allocate our resources to other areas that provide value to the Minecraft community and to end support for Minecraft Earth in June 2021."

Microsoft will cease all content and service support for Minecraft Earth on June 30 which means you won't be able to play or download the game any longer. It's certainly a bummer, and another reminder that we're still living through a global pandemic.

Stump - Will you use this like me? As an excuse to why I cant go walk around outside and exercise?

7. Dexter Revival Reveals Villain Casting and Plot Details

Lastly, Details are now emerging on the casting for the upcoming Dexter Revival and I have to say I am now just a little bit more excited.

From IGN

Showtime’s Dexter series revival has its villain, and it’s none other than Mr. Krabs himself: Clancy Brown.

Brown has had a strong career between film, television, and video game roles. IGN readers will recognize him as the voice of Spongebob Squarepant’s Mr. Krabs, Detroit: Become Human’s jaded detective Hank Anderson, as well as roles in The Shawshank Redemption, Highlander, and Starship Troopers.

Brown will be joining Dexter star Michael C. Hall, who is reprising his role as the vigilante serial killer Dexter Morgan. Hall has previously stated that he’s excited to return to the role after the original series’ “unsatisfying” ending.

Nikki - I know you are a fan of Dexter does adding an Icon like clancy brown to the mix get you excited for the comeback?

8.Daily Crunch: Roku buys Quibi's content library

If you’re wondering what will happen to Quibi shows like “Most Dangerous Game” and “Chrissy Court,” wonder no longer: They’re going to Roku.

The streaming TV platform announced today that it has acquired the global rights to Quibi’s content library, which it plans to bring to The Roku Channel, free and ad-supported, some this year. This includes “more than a dozen” shows that never got a chance to stream on Quibi before the app shut down.

“The most creative and imaginative minds in Hollywood created groundbreaking content for Quibi that exceeded our expectations,” said Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg in a statement. “We are thrilled that these stories, from the surreal to the sublime, have found a new home on The Roku Channel.”

Symph - This seems like a great way to add content to their growing channel and capitalize on some established brands. What do you think about this move?

9. ‘Doctor Who’: BBC Refuses To Deny Report That Jodie Whittaker Is Quitting Sci-Fi Series

Fans of the popular Doctor who series have been struck by bad luck. The 13th Doctor is rumored to be leaving the show.

From Deadline

The BBC has declined to comment on a report that Jodie Whittaker is set to hang up her sonic screwdriver and quit as the 13th Doctor in the British broadcaster’s iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who.

The well-connected Nicola Methven wrote in the Daily Mirror that Whittaker’s departure is being kept under wraps while filming on Season 13 continues. If she does exit the Tardis, it will be in keeping with her predecessors who also completed three seasons before moving on to other projects.

Whittaker made history when she became the first female Doctor in 2017. She followed in the footsteps of Peter Capaldi, while other previous doctors include David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Christopher Eccleston.

Stump - Do you think this is the end for 13?
