Join Dr. Fenwa Milhouse, Dr. Rena Malik and Dr. Yahir Santiago Lastra as we discuss the healthcare disparities in a 3 part podcast series. In this first episode we discuss the way covid-19 has impacted black americans, the historical context of healthcare disparities in the african american population, ways to improve your care of African American patients and more! -------During the latest podcast discussing the racial health disparities and systemic racism, at 24:40 I say, "we are fortunate enough to live in a predominantly white suburb"I need to discuss this for a moment. It was a statement I regret making. One that I didn't even realize I said until listening to the podcast myself. Even as a black woman, I subconsciously made a statement disparaging black communities. What this demonstrates is how racism can be internalized by minorities themselves. Often, black Americans are conditioned, whether consciously or not, that part of achieving the American dream is living in "desirable", predominantly white, affluent neighborhoods. I want to use this to further highlight that we all have implicit bias. This is my implicit bias showing and I hope it serves as an example to the SUFU community and audience at large. Finally, I want to absolutely correct my sentiments. I am fortunate to live in a well resourced and funded neighborhood - is what I actually meant to convey. It is unfortunate and unbalanced that neighborhoods well resourced and funded typically exclude predominantly black communities.
