Learn How Green Tea Polyphenols and Tai Chi Individually and in Combination Reduce the Risk to Bone Loss in Osteopenic Menopausal Women
Kirk Hamilton interviews Dr. Leslie Shen an Associate Professor of Pathology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. She is the co-author of a paper entitled "Effect Of Green Tea and Tai Chi on Bone Health in Postmenopausal Osteopenic Women: A 6-Month Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial," in the journal Osteoporosis International published in July of 2011. Originally from Taiwan, Dr. Shen has now spent over 2 decades studying how and why some Eastern lifestyle norms (such as drinking green tea and Tai Chi) might be beneficial for Westerners as well. This paper highlights the concept that bone loss is an inflammatory condition and that anti-inflammatory components in green tea (polyphenols), and the stress reduction derived from Tai Chi practice, may play important roles in maintaining bone health.
