Life in soccer outside of Major League Soccer can be a rough existence in the United States. Securing enough attendance, sponsorship revenue and relevance to survive is a real problem. Even the United Soccer League, which has grown dramatically at the Division 2 level, is not immune from teams threatening to fold.
I called up Nipun Chopra of Soctakes.com to discuss the growing pains of USL as they try to expand their soccer presence in the United States. We also talk about the teams that are struggling, and how the Professional League Standards impact the growth of soccer outside of the Division 1 level as it pertains to leagues like NISA.
