When I was a kid in high school my friends and I loved the Minutemen.  Each album they were getting bigger and bigger and then we found out that D Boon died.  This was more important to me than say the passing of Michael Jackson.  In my mind, I thought I would be in a punk band (I don't play an instrument and I am not a great singer) and I wrote a song called, "What did you do Mike Watt?"  It was one of the first songs that I ever wrote.
