André Roche was born in Paris in 1921. He was visiting Bordeaux in the south of France when the Nazis invaded France. He lived under the Nazi regime before escaping over the Pyrenees to Spain where he was imprisoned for several months. After his release he was able to join the French Army where he served until the spring of 1945 when he was wounded in battle. His wife, Paule, served in the French Resistance and received the US Citation for Medal of Freedom for her work.    Soldier’s Heart is written and produced by me, Cyndi Briggs, and features veterans stories from North Carolina. We honor vets by listening to their stories. You can follow along on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at Soldiers’ Heart NC.    If you have an idea for a story or interview, email us at [email protected].   Special thanks to the MUSE of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where all of these stories are archived. You can learn more about the museum at https://musews.org.   To hear André’s full interview, visit the MUSE’s Soundcloud account here: https://soundcloud.com/musews/andre-roche-december-2016.   Research Credits:  Thanks to Wikipedia for information on Oradour-Sur-Glane (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oradour-sur-Glane_massacre) and for information on the German occupation of France during WWII (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_military_administration_in_occupied_France_during_World_War_II#Daily_life).    Photo Credit: André Roche   Music Credits:  Free Music Archive.org Intro Music: Breathing - Spectacular Sound Productions Lock Down - Blue Dressed Man Credits Music: City Lights - Chad Crouch   YouTube Audio Library Trees in the Wind - Daniel Birch Wind Marching for Rain - Puddle of Infinity Solar Power - Ashley Shadow Rain Cloud Music - Emily A.
