Today on Sojourner Truth, we focus our attention on Haiti: the first free Black republic in the world and now the Western Hemispheres poorest country.

We hear speeches by Dr. Gerald Horne and Pierre Labossiere from a recent event at Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles about Haiti, the legacy of the Haitian Revolution and issues facing the country today. Dr. Horne is the Moores Professor of History & African-American Studies at the University of Houston and is the author of Confronting Black Jacobins: The U.S., the Haitian Revolution, and the Origins of the Dominican Republic. Labossiere is co-founder of the Haiti Action Committee, which strives to improve education, bring about social justice, and develop a stable democracy for the people of his native country.
