THE WRETCHED - A Witchy “Rear Window”

August 31, 2020 10:00

Using the “fish out of water” to introduce a movie going audience to a new setting and characters is easy to achieve. This is why it’s so commonly used in horror. Not only are the main characters out of their element, but this juxtaposition also illustrates just how strange, or dangerous their new surroundings are. We see this in flicks like; “Deliverance”, “Arachnophobia”, “The Conjuring”, “Amityville Horror”… Come to think of it, just about ANYTHING with a haunted house. The new film “T...

REBORN - Barbara Crampton is "Phenomenal" in this "Modern Take on 'Carrie'"

August 27, 2020 00:31

The true classics of horror cinema never rest long before their grave is disturbed. Exhumed for a remake to cash in on it’s notoriety, or to be borrowed from, in part or in whole, for a new, younger storyteller and filmmaker to put their own spin on the subject matter. To modernize it, or to fit elements of it into a very different narrative – reinventing the use of the tropes that made that classic a classic in the first place. Whether writer Michael Mahin and director Julian Richards re...

DEAD DICKS - "I Came For the "Dicks", But I Stayed For the Vagina"

August 26, 2020 23:47

There comes a time in everyone’s life when a drastic change must be made, hopefully for the better. For some it’s quitting a job, ending a troublesome relationship or returning to school. For Richie, the protagonist of the new Chris Bavota, Lee Paula Springer film “Dead Dicks”, this means suicide, but that’s just the beginning. “Dead Dicks” chronicles the rocky relationship between Richie, a chronically depressed and suicidal 30-something year old artist, and Becca, his younger medical st...

SMOKE & MIRRORS: The Story of Tom Savini - "A Look at The Godfather of Gore Himself"

July 31, 2020 10:00

If you’ve watched horror movies at all for the past few decades, it is very unlikely that you are not familiar with the works of special effects legend, ambitious director, prolific actor and renowned stuntman Tom Savini. From "Dawn of the Dead" to "Friday the 13th" to "Maniac" to "Creepshow", the man is this century’s Ray Harryhausen or a modern Jack Pierce, and possibly on the same level as Chaney. Tom Savini, the King of Splatter himself, is a man who needs no introduction in the wo...

SCREAM, QUEEN!: My Nightmare on Elm Street - "Horror...The Genre For Outsiders...All Outsiders"

July 24, 2020 10:00

Horror has always been the genre of outsiders. Since its early days, horror movie monsters were treated as misunderstood outcasts or beings that needed to stay hidden away from the outside world. As the genre evolved, the films themselves became associated with all that was decidedly outside the mainstream so naturally, outcasts and misfits were the people most likely to gravitate towards it. But what happens when a film appeals to outsiders who are even excluded from the larger horror comm...

THE HORROR OF IT ALL - "It Might Even Horrify You – A Look Back at the 1983 TV Movie"

July 17, 2020 20:42

IT MIGHT EVEN HORRIFY YOU - A Look Back at the 1983 TV Movie "The Horror of it All". I recently came across this documentary while looking up silent movies in the public domain. I was in the mood for something elusive and ethereal, such as infamous Lon Chaney works such as "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", or one of the seven versions of "Nosferatu" that exist (eight, if you count the unofficial one that replaces the original soundtrack with Type O Negative songs)...

LEVIATHAN: The Story of Hellraiser & Hellbound Part 2 - "It Could Have Gone Much Deeper"

July 11, 2020 12:32

Two years ago I reviewed the first part of "Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser and Hellraiser Part II". In the review I mentioned that it seemed unfair to criticize a documentary that only covers half the story. Well, now Shudder has finally released the second part and I can now say with all certainty ... that I have a lot of the same problems that I had with the first part. Like before, this film covers the various stories and anecdotes that went into the making of "Hellbound: Hellraise...

SCARY STORIES - "Essential Viewing For An Entire Generation"

July 11, 2020 11:39

It never ceases to amaze me how humans begin their life journey seemingly smarter than the much larger and supposedly wiser adults who raise them. They set limitations on children to protect them from the dangers of the world, but wouldn’t you say they sometimes go overboard? For the millions of children who’ve read comic books thought the near century they’ve been in print, how many of them have actually thought they could follow in Superman’s levitating footsteps and tried to fly? The num...

DOUBLE VISION: "Don't Look Now" Vs. "Antichrist"

June 28, 2020 22:05

"DON'T LOOK NOW" AND "ANTICHRIST" - ARE THEY THE SAME MOVIE? IS IT A COINCIDENCE? IT CAN GO EITHER WAY! Note: "Antichrist"’s main characters are unnamed, simply called He and She. In an attempt to eliminate any confusion, any variation of the pronouns ‘he’ or ‘she’ will be capitalized to be able to tell them apart from using the pronouns to refer to John and Laura in "Don’t Look Now" without capitalization. For example, He/Him/His or She/Her/Hers will refer to "Antichrist", while all low...

TERROR 5 - "Stylized - Gorry Horror"

May 29, 2020 23:31

“Don’t cry for me Argentina!”...alright, I got that reference out of the way early so now I can discuss "Terror 5" without any obstruction from Madonna. That is always a concern of mine, that Madonna of all people, will force her way into one of my reviews. It keeps me awake at night. But why Madonna? Because "Terror 5" is by a pair of talented brothers from Argentina...and there you have it. "Terror 5" is a pseudo-anthology film. In fact it’s title is derived from the five stories that...

Without spoilers, Forest chats about what he enjoyed about "Avengers: End Game". They also dive into the strange world that is Time Life's "Mysteries of the Unknown" book series. TIME...

Rhiannon kicks things off with Ken Russell's "Gothic", about the inspiration for Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", complete with Gothic literary history lesson. Forest covers a look at a less than flattering take on modern goths with "Goth". And Cory rounds things out with "Strangeland" - a cautionary tale of chatrooms and the underground goth lifestyle of the mid '90s starring Dee Snider. They also chat about "Saw" confusion, askin...

SF POD 359: Things, The Thingy & Hellroller

May 26, 2020 22:17

This week the Horror Duo takes on three films that are highly questionable in nature. Forest & Rhiannon take on the indie made "Things" and "The Thingy" about demonic bugs and a placenta. Following in their footsteps, Cory shares his thoughts on "Hellroller", about a killer on wheels. They also chat about visiting a bar-cade for Forest's birthday. Rhiannon goes to a "Uriah Heep" concert and her interest in the band is questioned (more in Bloody Bits #359). Cory walks over 31 miles playing...

SF POD 362: The Manster & Godzilla: King of the Monsters

May 26, 2020 22:16

GOING ATTRACTIONS: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace

May 21, 2020 03:39

When it comes to film history and filmmaking, I always try to expand my knowledge when I can. What kind of self-respecting film fanatic and critic would I be if I didn’t try to know as much as possible? This is why I not only hunt down documentaries, but try to shine a light on them so more people can benefit from the hard work and research put into them. Speaking of which, you may remember a few years back I covered "Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-in Movie"...

RONDO - "A Gritty Sex-Fueled Blood Bath"

May 17, 2020 14:06

Everything old is new again, and when it comes to genre filmmaking...well, I suppose it never REALLY went out of style. Rondo, written and directed by Drew Barnhardt falls into that now overflowing category that is "retro". While those films are fun, I can safely say that I've had my fill. Fortunately for me, Mr. Barnhardt avoided the common trappings of having an '80s synth score, neon pink and blue lighting and any reference to VHS, and instead focuses on interesting characters and situat...

BLOOD PARADISE - "Horror From the Noth"

May 17, 2020 13:37

From time to time the daily grind of our responsibilities takes it’s toll and we reach our limit. When this happens, most retreat to some coveted vacation spot where the phone gets turned off and the margaritas start to flow. This is the position that best selling author Robin Richards finds herself in. Her most recent book, “Return to Blood Paradise” fails to reach the same critical and financial success as her previous books. Per the advise of her literary agent she takes a vacation to a ...

MOMO: The Missouri Monster

May 17, 2020 13:28

The strange and unexplained has fascinated man kind since the time of early man, and has sparked investigations for centuries. But in the past fifty or so years these topics have never received more attention. Bigfoot leaped into the public’s collective conscious with the release of the iconic Patterson–Gimlin Bigfoot footage in 1967, and since then countless books, television series and documentaries have been made on this and other similar subjects. People have take up Cryptozoology as...

INCREDIBLE VIOLENCE - "Twisted & Surreal"

May 17, 2020 13:19

It isn’t everyday that a filmmaker working within the horror genre will attempt to do something new and interesting with a tired cliché premise. More often than not the struggle is getting just enough footage to complete the film without going over budget, let alone running the risk of alienating the audience by creating something to unfamiliar. The plot to just about any slasher movie can write itself and if you add a little found footage into the mix, the resulting 80+ minutes of movie...

SPINE CHILLER - "Born of Blood & Jack O’ Lanterns"

May 17, 2020 13:05

Well, it’s that time of year when the temperatures start to drop, the leaves change color and the corpses of countless gourds litter the homes of America. And during this Autumn season, there is nothing better for those of us who seek spooky than a good horror anthology. And what could be better than a horror anthology set on Halloween? "Spine Chiller", from aspiring indie filmmaker Jacob Perrett, is just that - a four segment anthology with an interwoven wraparound that is set on Hallow...

THE FARE - “Full of Curious Surprises and Honesty”

May 17, 2020 13:04

“Life is a journey and not a destination”. This old saying tells us that the many experiences and hardships of life are the true reward, and come in the form of wisdom, rather than our intended goals. This hits at the heart of the newly released sci-fi/thriller "The Fare", from writer Brinna Kelly and director D.C. Hamilton. "The Fare" begins with Harris, a man in his mid thirties who’s occupation, driving a cab, is to reach the final destination of his passengers while patiently passing...

AUTOMATION - "The Future is Here and with it Comes Plenty of Fear"

May 17, 2020 13:04

In the ‘80s and ‘90s there were a slue of films about futuristic automatons that turn against the very human beings who they were built to replace in the work place and on the battlefield. The biggie in this sci-fi sub-genre was James Cameron’s "The Terminator" which spawned an incalculable number of rip-off, imitators and impersonators. This is no new idea in fact, the fear of science and modern technology has routinely found itself the stuff of science fiction since the earliest days o...

THE HEAD HUNTER - "Sword & Sorcery Lives!"

May 17, 2020 13:04

The “Sword & Sorcery” genre is one of the most produced, peaking in the mid 1980s and eventually petering out late ‘90s before the genre had new life breathed into it by Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. Sword and Sorcery always played little brother to the menagerie of over the top action shoot ‘em ups, over-sexed slashers, and strange chest bursting sci-fi creature features, and yet, they remained a regular staple of the silver screen, and even more so to the straight to video ...

THE DARK RED - "Don't Mess With Mama"

May 17, 2020 13:03

Do crazy people know that they are crazy? This is a question that I’m sure many of you have wondered at least once. Delusions, voices, paranoia and an altered perception of reality are just a few tropes of horror movie “crazy” but are also real life symptoms of mental illness. People suffering from these afflictions can be erratic, dangerous and capable of self-harm. As a result, they are often committed into a mental health facility for treatment. But what if all the “crazy” that the patie...

HARPOON - "The Blackest of Comedy"

May 17, 2020 13:02

We’ve all been in the situation where we’re invited to an after hours work gathering or a family get together that encourages you to bring along a friend. And we all have at least one particular friend, whether it be their attitude or sense of humor, you know that you absolutely CAN NOT take them with you. We’ll say that they are a little too real for their own good. If you can’t relate to that, well then, YOU are that person. Please, do your friends a favor and tone it down a little, al...

BLISS - "A Neon Nightmare - Pure Heavy Metal"

May 17, 2020 12:47

When I hear the phrase “heavy metal”, what comes to mind are bands like Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne – mainstays of the musical sub-genre. But beyond the connection to dark, riffy rock 'n' roll, lays the sci-fi/fantasy comics magazine "Heavy Metal". Known best for it's tales of dark and dangerous dystopias, Conan-esque sword and sorcery and highly suggestive erotic imagery. Much like "Heavy Metal", the films of Joe Begos are brutally dark, blood splattered works of genre fiction with a...
