Have you seen black and white #ChallengeAccepted selfies floating around instagram but wondered what was actually going on? Turns out it's supposed to be associated with a social media movement to raise awareness about domestic violence against women in Turkey.
There are a few different theories about the origins of this trend and the meanings of it, but I think it's so important to recognise the causes behind social media trends. Not saying the trend has turned into a bad thing at all; women supporting women is always important, but the support should extend to those in the difficult situations across the world.
Meaning can get lost in social media trends and performative activism often misses the mark.
