ANURYZM - Ruby Demon

Lebanese-UAE progressive metal frontrunners ANURYZM return with their long-awaited new single and stunning animated video 'Ruby Demon'.

The band comment: “2020 has certainly brought its host of demons. But we wanted to end the year by marking our return with a song that would resonate with everyone. 'Ruby Demon' is a labour of love which took months of composition, arrangement, scripting, and designing; and we could not have accomplished this feat without the wonderfully talented people that we call family. We truly hope that you are left in jaw-dropping amazement.”

Formed in 2003, ANURYZM are one of the prominent forces in middle-eastern rock and metal, and the leading progressive metal band. Having gone through various line-up changes, dealt with the tragic death of a founding guitarist and spent time honing their sound, by the 2010s they were a true musical force to be reckoned with.

Following the release of debut album Worm’s Eye View (2011), the band earned supports with many prominent acts such as Avenged Sevenfold, Yngwie Malmsteen, Scorpions, Nightwish, Epica, Dark Tranquillity, Myrath, Orphaned Land as well as Black Sabbath at the iconic Du Arena, in Abu Dhabi.

In 2014 ANURYZM hit the studio to write their next album and sought help from guest musicians Michael Lepond (Symphony X), Uri Dijk, Charlie Zeleny, and composer Christopher Chaplin. 2015 saw the release of second album All Is Not for All via Melodic Revolution Records and in 2016 embarked on their ‘Awakening the Humanoids’ European tour, playing cities in Germany, Holland, and Belgium. 2019 saw the band appear at festivals in Lebanon and Romania, as well as a unique showcase event with Sceptic Flesh in Dubai.

After relocating to Canada in 2018 the band set out write new material for their next album, with new members Simen Sandnes on drums, and Rami Lakkis bass. 2019 saw the departure of long-time vocalist Nadeem Bibby and the introduction of new vocalist Will Patterson.

The long anticipated follow up to All Is Not for All is planned for 2021, more news soon.

ANURYZM  are:
John Bakhos - guitars
Jay Jahed - synthesizers
Will Patterson - vocals
Rami Lakkis - bass guitars
Simen Sandnes - drums

 My thoughts

Ruby is a track that takes straight away reminds of a classic dream theatre, it’s a track that takes on so many different forms, there are many layers to this track from guitars, vocals and synth, and I feel this is what makes this stand out from current prog tracks, great production with some killer guitars that pack some punch and vocals that switch between melodic hooks and more aggressive tones. With so many layers that are blended beautiful what should not be missed is the awesome synth tones that just naturally bring it all home, overall an incredible track to kick things off with, also on a side note the video is so cool.

The group - Ross Drummond (vocals and guitar), Matt Rebeiro (drums) and Peter Hakola (bass and vocals) - formed at a chance meeting at a pub quiz hosted by ex-Coronation Street star Martin Hancock, almost certainly the only band in the world to have this claim to fame.

Cheap Meat had already kicked up a fuss with their hook-filled, guitar-heavy The Parts That Show EP and subsequent single 'Spin-Offs'. Some years on they now return with People Are The Worst, an LP which has been created despite significant setbacks.

The theme of the record is misanthrope; the story, DIY.

People Are The Worst was mostly written during a time of significant socio-political unrest – Brexit debates at their peak, Trump being, well, Trump, and culture wars on left and right of increasing hysteria. The band's refrain became the title of the LP.

The specific context and themes of the record are rooted in the day-to-day unpleasantness the band found themselves involved in – which is captured in the album artwork, a series of microaggressions all claustrophobically close together in a high-rise apartment block.

It’s taken a long time for CHEAP MEAT to get their heads around releasing People Are The Worst. In the span between the EP release and now, Matt’s had two kids, Pete was diagnosed with manic depression/bi-polar disorder, and Ross was diagnosed with high-functioning depression and anxiety. Safe to say the group have been through the ringer: emotionally, physically and creatively.

Despite the challenges, People Are The Worst is the record the band wanted to make, on their own terms, and is released on their own label, Jerk Store Records.

Despite too, People being The Worst, some are the best – not least the crew of friends and creative contacts CHEAP MEAT relied on to make their record.

There are plenty of moments of light and love throughout the LP. Musically, as a counterpoint to the bleakest lyrical moments, the album delivers a sonically upbeat palette, delivering poppy hooks and air-guitar-euphoria. Clocking in at only 30 minutes or so, People Are The Worst is here for a good time, not a long time.

CHEAP MEAT have previously received acclaim from Kerrang!, Rock Sound and Upset, and supported Bob Mould, Frank Iero, Tellison, Lonely The Brave, We Are The Ocean, and have performed at 2000 Trees and The Great Escape festivals, among others.

My thoughts

Marigold Moon took me a couple of listens to get my head around to what is happening on this track, overall, the production is crisp, the intro reminded me of Alex is on fire track young cardinals with its opening riff,  the track for takes cues from kings of Leon meets Royal blood which is cool, I really enjoyed the way the guitars builds throughout the track and the different tones from the guitars, my only criticism would be and I trying to be as polite as possible the chorus did not pull me in a felt it was bit mundane.

Moving over to our next single the returns of a band I really enjoyed their EP this year.

Dohny Jep - Looking In
My thoughts I start by addressing the elephant in the room the beauty of this band is they are inspired by the likes of Don Broco and Bring me the horizon, they use this inspiration to create their own unique musical journey, looking in is packed with different layers that have a natural fit, nothing with this track feels forced, it has a great organic feel. Filled with guitars that punch natural hooks and awesome melodies and a chorus that soars. This is one to add to your playlist and you should not turn a blind eye too

Looking is taken from the upcoming EP Smile It May Never Happen keep an eye out for the. This release.
