Junko Furuta: A Kidnapping and Horrific Killing

The murder story of Junko Furuta - the 16-year-old Japanese student who endured 44 days of hell, is a nightmare.

Junko was a 16-year-old girl who attended a high school in Misato in Saitama Prefecture in Japan. Misato is only about 40 minutes away from where I’m currently living, and it’s incredibly difficult to imagine this kind of thing happening so close to my home. Japan is considered a very safe country — seriously, I have never felt more comfortable walking around by myself at night. In fact, in 2015, Japan had one of the lowest murder rates in the entire world.
