This year has been a wild trip for singles all over the world, with a worldwide pandemic, the largest civil rights movement of our generation, and the most critical U.S. presidential election in recent history. But, despite the ups and downs, one thing was clear: individuals were more eager than ever to find love. We’ve seen relationships start and flourish even when in isolation as a result of love under lockdown. We witnessed a significant increase in individuals interacting digitally over the topics they care about, like climate change and food, right from the start, when a physical connection was no longer an immediate option for many.

We evaluated this year’s dating landscape shift to help us estimate dating trends for 2021 as 2020 draws to a close.

Here are some of the trends we’ve observed after looking at the data given by OkCupid –

Thunberging – Named after the environmentalist Greta Thunberg, Thunberging is an activity where environmentalists share their mutual concern for the environment and bond over such vexing issues. 84% of the millennials are genuinely concerned about the environment.
Inner-party dating – Around 3 million daters could not date people with strong opposing political views. People are increasingly refusing to date across political lines. In 2019, 53% of respondents indicated they couldn’t date someone who held opposing political views to them, and that number grew to 60% in 2020.
Selfie-love – 92 percent of respondents from all over the world indicated they were still looking for love while quarantined, and nearly 30 percent of singles said they had gone on at least one virtual date. With people spending more time on the app, we should expect a shift in singles paying more attention to their dating profile images. Daters are snapping more selfies to keep their accounts up to date because they are confined at home with no concert or holiday photos to submit. According to new research, 95% of daters believe that happy selfies are the best.
Moving in with your partner – The decision to move in with your future wife/husband is indeed a big one. It is, however, always wise to do so before walking down the aisle. Couples, now, more than ever, are expediting the decision to start a live-in relationship amid a pandemic.
