Two week sprints, two hour time box for sprint planning, and two hours of grooming the backlog throughout the previous sprint (before we get to sprint planning). We're still solutioning and grooming in sprint planning. Inb4 the underlying problem is we need to ask ourselves why the team cannot finish planning within the time box, but how do you handle this situation in the moment when you run out of time and the team hasn't finished planning?

I understand the value of time boxing, but it seems counterproductive to cut it off if the team needs more time to finish planning. In my case the Product Owner asked me, "When are we going to put these cards in the sprint?" to which I replied: "When we have finished planning."

The next time everyone is available to finish planning is the following day, and we only have an hour because of other meetings that people are in and some people are on multiple teams so they have to go to their other teams' plannings, too.

So back to my question - how do you deal with this situation in the moment? Do you send the team away to work on random other things? Keep going past the time box? What if going past the time box is not an option (people need to pick up their kids from school, etc)?
