BBC writer Douglas Adams was asked to draft an original comedy script which he conceived as a small, one-room affair that wouldn't strain the production budget. When he was encouraged to think bigger, the story became the epic tale of Arthur Dent and company who zoom through the galaxy aboard a stolen spaceship after Earth's destruction - and that was only the beginning. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy began on March 8, 1978.
