In 1944 Lou Brissie was hit with an artillery shell and his lower leg was shattered in 30 pieces. The doctors wanted to amputate his leg but he refused, telling them he was a pitcher with a shot to play in the majors.

After two years and 23 surgeries Brissie was signed by the Philadelphia A’s. He did make it to the majors where he pitched for seven years and even appeared in an All-Star Game.

What an amazing story of grit and determination that we can all learn from. If you have a dream, don’t give up!
