Get On Down just rereleased the Houston Rap Book the long-out-of-print book which Bun B declared ".... defines Houston hip-hop." Houston Rap profiles noted artists such as Bun B of UGK, Z-Ro, Big Mike, K-Rino, Willie D of the Geto Boys, Lil' Troy, and Paul Wall, alongside reflections on the lives of departed legends such as DJ Screw, Pimp C, and Big Hawk. The book also features community leaders, rappers, producers, businessmen, and family members, all providing important insight into a great American cultural narrative, and the second edition features even more details into this astonishing and influential scene. In this episode, we're joined by Big Smoking Mitch of U.G.K. (he made the name up,) and D. A. of the uniquely influential Blac Monks. Over the course of the show, they break down the evolution of Port Author & Houston rap, from the beginning. From the formation of U.G.K. to meeting DJ Screw, they touch on everything. Mitch discusses Russell "BigTyme" Washington, and U.G.K. signing with him. D.A. shares his memories of Mr. 3-2 and talks about Bushwick Bill forming the Blac Monks, and how he was almost in The Convicts. They reminisce about PSK-13, Point Blank, DJ DMD, Scarface, Big Mike, E.S.G., K-Rino & his lyricism, Devin the Dude, & much more. We conclude the episode by showing them some classic Country Rap Tune albums and getting their thoughts and behind-the-scenes stories on them.
