Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legend Gary Gold for #RugbyHive Episode 9.

Gold has coached professionally for 20 years in 4 different countries, with stints at London Irish (2001-2005), Newcastle Falcons (2012), Bath (2012-2013) and Worcester Warriors (2016-2017) in the United Kingdom, Western Province (2005-2008) and the Sharks (2015-2016) in South Africa and the Kobelco Steelers (2014-2015) in Japan.

Internationally he was the Assistant Coach for the Springboks (2008-2011), recording a rare Tri Nations title with South Africa in 2009, as well as defeating the New Zealand All Blacks on 4 occasions. Tri Nations results: Springboks 28-19 All Blacks (Bloemfontein), Springboks 31-19 All Blacks (Durban), Springboks 32-29 All Blacks (Hamilton), Springboks 29-17 Australia (Cape Town), Springboks 32-25 Australia (Perth), Springboks 6-21 Australia (Brisbane).

He was also the Assistant Coach when the Springboks last played the British & Irish Lions, winning the Series 2-1 in 2009.

Gold has coached the United States since 2018, winning the Americas Rugby Championship with the Eagles, and recorded a 30-29 victory over Scotland, the first time the USA has defeated a nation inside the top 10 rankings in the professional era.

In this episode we trace Gold’s entry into coaching, which people helped guide him along the way, how to become a better rugby coach, plus we look at the challenges one faces in the tough world of professional sports.

We reflect on Rugby World Cup 1995, the Tri Nations and tactically how his Springboks defeated the All Blacks.

What excites Gold about rugby in the USA? What role does Major League Rugby play? What can we expect from the Eagles at Rugby World Cup 2023?
