Mikhail Gorbachev, one of most recognizable politicians of the 20th century, recently marked his 90th birthday and, while his legacy still remains the subject of hot ideological debate, it’s puzzling that his main brainchild, perestroika, wasn’t studied very carefully by social scientists. What happens when a system reaches its structural limits? This question is as pressing for capitalism as it was for communism some 30 years ago. Can the experience of the Soviet collapse offer some salvation for a capitalist system that is bursting at the seams?
