A strange traffic stop for me on Wednesday. While I was heading home, moving rapidly from a 90kmh to a 50kmh speed limit, I turned a hard right and noticed a Surete Quebec police cruiser parked alongside the road in the lot of a closed restaurant. Slowing down for the right turn I was parallel to the police cruiser for about two seconds. I made the right turn, only to have the SQ cruiser follow me with the lights flashing. I stopped and when the police walked to my window I thought it was probably speeding, although I didn't think I had been. The officer said "I'm stopping you because you weren't wearing your seat belt." Whoa!! I always wear my seat belt and had been all the drive home. Besides I am sure he couldn't see into my car. It has tan leather seats and the seat belt is tan in colour. I challenged the officer and said "With respect officer, you're wrong. I was wearing my belt and I always do, and I don't think you could see into my car from where you were parked." He asked for my driver's licence and just glanced at it before giving it back. We made a little small talk, he dropped his complaint and wished me a good afternoon and I was on my way.Now ...what the heck was that about? He accused me, but never defended his accusation. Just let me go.What do you think that traffic stop was all about? It wasn't about a seat belt, that's for sure.
