Your teenager may have the physical ability to be sexually active, but is that all it takes? The easy answer is, yes, but the real answer is quite a bit more complicated.  In our work we have seen numerous teenage pregnancies.  We have yet to see one in which the father and mother were prepared for what lies ahead.  Due to their immaturity and lack of understanding, they often are emotionally devastated.

We may think of this as a teenage problem, but in this episode we discuss this as being a parenting problem, or maybe a better word is, opportunity.  As parents we have the opportunity from the time they are young to teach them many different things.  One thing we often overlook to teach is emotional well being. In other words, teaching our children how to recognize and understand their emotions rather than being surprised or devastated by them.

That's what happens when we turn a blind eye or in some cases, even promote our teens being sexually active.  Yes, they may have the physical tools, but most assuredly they are not prepared on the emotional front.  As parents we must take the time to recognize what we may be allowing our kids to experience.  Just because all the other kids are doing it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Being a parent can be difficult, but not acting like a parent can lead to even greater difficulties.  As parents it is our responsibility to prepare our children for the future the best we can.  In the area of emotional stability, we have dropped the ball over the past few generations and we are all paying the emotional as well as physical price.  We can do better, because we must do better for the next generation.
