The recent tragic event of Damar Hamlin suffering cardiac arrest after tackling Tee Higgins during a Monday Night Football Game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals has grabbed many people's attention. Among those whose interest has been sparked are parents of kids that play sports, especially sports with higher rates and risks of injury.  One day after the event there were already articles being published about the risks of football and why kids should not play it.

During this show, Linda and Merrill attempt to take a broader view of the event.  In no means should the risks of harm to your child be dismissed, but it is important to consider all the various types of harm that we should be aware of.  Yes, football may expose your child to substantial risks, but what harm could you be putting your child at risk of by not allowing them to play football or a host of other activities?

Over the past decade, we have seen the harm done by over-protective parents.  There are now numerous studies that show greater increases in our kids not being able to handle stress, higher anxiety, and depression, afraid of taking risks to the point of not desiring to move out of the house, get a driver's license, or move away to school.  These are not proving to be detrimental to their overall development as adults and their ability to contribute to society in a positive manner.

So, the question is: "How should I determine whether an activity or sport is worth the risk?"  Merrill and Linda give parents a very clear process to help parents with this decision.  The answer is not a one-size-fits-all.  So much depends on what the intended goals for the child are and who the child is.  Check out the show to get the details in order to grow strong and healthy young adults that will soon be the future leaders of our nation.
