Bill McKay talks to Kathryn about the new types of building work that from August will no longer require a building consent, saving homeowners up to $18 million a year and reducing the number of consents by 9000. Currently buildings under 10 metres square, like garden sheds don't need building consent. This is being increased to 30 m2 for sheds, cabins, sleepouts, verandahs, and 40m2 for carports. Bill McKay is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland.
