Fisheries scientist says the Government's move to ban commercial fishing skippers throwing unwanted catch overboard is is the biggest change to fisheries management in 100 years. The Minister for Oceans and Fisheries David Parker, has announced law changes requiring commercial skippers to bring their total catch back to port. Cameras will be put on 300 vessels over four years to enforce the new rules, at a cost of $68 million. The changes follow a damming report in 2016 by Mike Heron QC, which confirmed widespread fish dumping as a practice in the industry, and flawed prosecution procedures by the Ministry for Primary Industries.
